Staircase construction isn’t just carpentry, it’s applied geometry. Our founder, Ron Sylwester, majored in mathematics before dedicating his life to master craftsmanship. In the 1970s, he co-developed and patented interlocking railing systems still reflected in the precision of every staircase we build today. When you hire Staircrafters, you’re hiring decades of mathematical precision, not a guess dressed up as a bid.
Ron founded Staircrafters, Inc. in 1991. In 2015, he made a deliberate choice to narrow the company’s focus, stepping back from a wider service area across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho to concentrate exclusively on high-end staircase remodeling here in SW Washington. That decision meant fewer projects, but it meant getting every one of them right.
No Subcontractors. No Shortcuts.
Every staircase featured across this site, curved rails, cable railings, open concepts, closed designs, was designed, manufactured, and installed by our own crew. That’s not a marketing line, it’s how we operate. When the same people who quote your project also build it, details don’t get lost in translation between trades, and you’re never left wondering who’s actually going to show up at your home.
We don’t use transient day laborers or rotating subcontractors. Ron hand-selected the crew that works alongside him, and some of our master installers have been working side-by-side with him for more than 35 years. That kind of unspoken teamwork shows up in the finish: perfectly level treads, uniform step height from top to bottom, and no squeaks. Ron personally oversees the pre-staining, sealing, and painting on every project, whether it’s correcting a staircase that’s fallen out of code, matching a stain color to cabinets installed years ago, or hand-laminating a curved rail to a client’s exact pattern.
If you’re looking for the cheapest, fastest, quick-and-dirty bid, we’re not the contractor for you. We provide honest, accurate, transparent estimates only after an on-site structural review, because every project is genuinely bespoke, and no two staircases are priced the same. We work by appointment only, on a cash or check basis with clear contract milestones, and we keep the jobsite clean with daily dust containment and cleanup throughout tear-out and construction.
