Columbia River

This staircase presented a structural puzzle before it presented a design opportunity: a non-code-compliant layout built around a center elevator shaft. The client’s request was simple to state and harder to execute, make it beautiful, and make it fully code passing.

Structural constraints like a center elevator shaft don’t leave much room for error. This staircase now meets code fully while still delivering the visual impact this Columbia River home called for, proof that safety and design don’t have to compete.
